Boca Juniors wins Argentina title in dramatic final round

Buenos Aires, October 24 (BNA) Boca Juniors crowned the Argentine title on Sunday after tying 2-2 with rival Independiente in a thrilling final round that stunned the South American country.

The club’s 35th title at Bombonera Stadium came after River Plate beat arch-rival Racing Club, another contender for the title, 2-1.

Boca finished the tournament’s 27 rounds with 52 points, two points behind Racing, the Associated Press reported.

Leandro Fernandez opened the scoring for Independiente from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute. Boca equalized with Paul Fernandez two minutes later. Colombian striker Sebastian Villa put the hosts ahead in the 50th minute, but the visitors equalized again in the 81st minute.

This equalizer made Boca wait for the result of Racing at home against River Plate. The host scored the first goal with Matías Rojas from a penalty kick in the 56th minute, but River scored two goals with Miguel Borja, in the 80th minute and in the last seconds of the match, to win the last official match for Marcelo Gallardo as coach.
