Biden says freedoms under assault; urges ‘principled patriotism’

Washington, July 5 (BNA) On the occasion of the celebration of American Independence Day, President Joe Biden said that freedoms in America are under assault and urged citizens to engage in “principled patriotism” as the country faces economic challenges and national divisions.

“From the deepest depths of our crises, we always rise to our highest levels,” Biden said in remarks at the White House. “We have been tested before, just as we are being tested today, but we have never failed because we have not abandoned the fundamental beliefs and promises that characterize this nation.”

Without specifically mentioning it, Biden appeared to acknowledge the Supreme Court’s recent decision to dismiss Roe v. Wade, which protected women’s rights to have abortions, while also pointing to the challenges Americans face economically, Reuters reports.

“Our economy is growing, but not without pain. Freedom is under attack… here and abroad,” he said.

Biden urged unity despite the country’s divisions.

“On this day amidst the storm and strife, we hope that we commit ourselves to principled patriotism,” he said. “I think we are more united than we are divided. And even more so, I think it’s a choice we make, and I think we can choose unity and unity of purpose.”
