Biden, 80, makes 2024 presidential run official: ‘Let’s finish this job’

Washington, April 25 (BNA) US President Joe Biden said Tuesday that he will seek a second term in the White House in 2024, a decision that will test whether Americans are ready to give the 80-year-old Democrat, who is already the oldest president of the United States age of the United States. Not at all, another four years in office.

Biden made the announcement in a brilliantly produced video released by his new campaign team, in which he declares that his job is to stand up for American democracy.

“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we were in a fight for the soul of America, and we still are,” Biden said. “This is not the time to get complacent. That’s why I’m running for re-election.” He said, “Let’s finish this job. I know we can.”

Calling Republican platforms threats to American freedom, Biden has vowed to fight efforts to limit women’s health care, cut Social Security, and ban books, reports Reuters.

In the two years since taking office from Trump, Biden has won congressional approval for billions of dollars in federal money to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and new infrastructure, and has overseen the lowest unemployment levels since 1969, though 40 years ago. High inflation has marred his economic record.

Biden’s age makes his re-election bid an historic and risky gamble for the Democratic Party, which faces a difficult electoral map to hold the Senate in 2024 and is in the minority in the House of Representatives now.

Biden’s approval ratings are stuck at just 39% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll released April 19, and there are intense concerns about his age among some Americans. He will be 86 years old by the end of a potential second term, nearly a decade higher than the average life expectancy of males in the United States.

Vice President Kamala Harris, Vice President, will join Biden in his 2024 endeavor.
