Beijing district orders mass virus testing ahead of Olympics

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (BNA): People in the Beijing region of nearly two million people were ordered Sunday to undergo mass testing for the coronavirus after a spate of infections as China tightened disease control controls ahead of the Winter Olympics.

The government has told people in areas of the Chinese capital considered to be at high risk of infection not to leave the city after 25 cases were discovered in Fengtai District and 14 others.

Authorities are ramping up enforcement of their “zero tolerance” strategy aimed at isolating every infected person as Beijing prepares to open the Winter Games on February 4 under heavy anti-virus controls, reports the Associated Press.

The city government’s spokesman, Xu Hejian, said at a press conference that the Chinese capital should “take the most resolute, resolute and strict measures to prevent the chain of transmission of the epidemic.”

Nationwide, 56 new confirmed infections were reported in the 24 hours to midnight Saturday. The National Health Commission said 37 people are believed to have been taken from abroad.

China has reported 4,636 deaths out of 105,603 confirmed cases and seven suspected cases since the epidemic began.

The Olympic Games are held under strict controls aimed at isolating athletes, reporters and officials from the outside world. Athletes must be vaccinated or quarantined after arriving in China.

Other outbreaks have prompted the government to impose travel bans on the major cities of Xi’an and Tianjin.
