Bayern suffer worst-ever German Cup defeat in 5-0 shock at Gladbach

Berlin, Oct. 28 (BNA): Borussia Moenchengladbach scored three goals in the first 21 minutes to lead Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich to their worst ever defeat in the German Cup, 5-0 in the second round on Wednesday.

Koudio Kone opened the scoring in the second minute with a low shot before Rami Bensabiani scored in the 15th minute in the lower left corner, and with a penalty kick in the 21st minute for the hosts.

After scoring the first and third goal, Brill Empolo finished matters against Bayern himself in the 51st minute between the legs of Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, and in the 57th minute away from the right post, according to the German news agency (dpa).

“It’s horrific. It was a mass blackout. I have no explanation for it,” Bayern Munich board member Hasan Salihamidzic said after the humiliation.

“Tonight will definitely become a part of Borussia Moenchengladbach’s history,” Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl said. “We are motivated that Bayern are the best team in the world.”

Gladbach overthrew Bayern Munich for the first time in the competition in the seventh meeting of the two teams.

The 20-times winner Bayern had never lost by this margin in the competition, their worst loss to date 5-1 in Cologne in the second leg of the 1972 quarter-final.

It was their biggest defeat in a domestic match in 43 years since the 7-1 collapse of the Bundesliga at Fortuna Dusseldorf in December 1978.

Bayern defenders Dayot Obecano, who has turned 23, and Lucas Hernandez, who was sentenced to prison for breaching a restraining order in Spain, had a day to forget and could not handle the Gladbach attack.

Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann remained absent after testing positive for coronavirus last week, as assistant Dino Topmueller took charge once again for the Bundesliga champions who were denied even a consolation goal from Corentin Tolisso off the crossbar.

Bayer Leverkusen also exited the match, falling 2-1 at home to second-division team Karlsruhe.

The visitors had a dream start with Lucas Quito scoring in the fifth minute, and after Jeremy Frimpong’s provisional equalizer, goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky gifted Karlsruhe the winning goal when he played the ball to Choi Kyung Rok who calmly scored into the net. .

“There is a lot of joy in hope,” said Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah. “It’s hard to get over that.”

Elsewhere, VFL Bochum beat Augsburg 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw over 120 minutes. Goalkeeper Manuel Reimann, who took part in the penalty shootout, failed to stop a penalty but scored on the last attempt after Augsburg’s last penalty kick was hit by Arne Mayer over the bar.

Anthony Modeste scored two goals in five minutes after coming in in a 2-0 Cologne match at Stuttgart. Union Berlin came from behind to win 3-1 in extra time at the third-tier stadium Waldhof Mannheim. The second division leader, St. Pauli Hamburg, was among the other winners.

Defending champion Borussia Dortmund qualified for the third round, scheduled for mid-January.
