Bayern coach Nagelsmann tests positive for coronavirus

Lisbon, October 21 (BNA) The German Football League champion said today, Thursday, that tests have proven that Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has contracted the Corona virus, despite being fully vaccinated and quarantined at the present time.

Nagelsmann was not on the bench in Munich’s 4-0 Champions League win over Portugal’s Benfica on Wednesday, with Munich reporting flu-like symptoms before the match.

Nagelsmann took to Twitter later Thursday, saying, “Thank you for all my well wishes. I’m fine under the circumstances.”

Bayern Munich plays Hoffenheim on Saturday in the Bundesliga next week and plays in Borussia Moenchengladbach in the German Cup and Union Berlin in the league.

Nagelsmann could miss all of those matches and possibly also his November 2 home date with Benfica.

Munich health authorities said quarantine periods are usually 14 days, but people who have been fully vaccinated without any symptoms can return to their daily lives with a negative PCR test after five days of isolation.

The club is also hopeful that none of its players and staff will also contract the virus in this busy part of the season.

Assistants Dino Topmüller and Xavier Zimbrod are expected to replace Nagelsmann, as was the case in Lisbon where Leroy Sane’s double saw them win three out of three in the elite event.

Sane said that “the coaches prepared us well.”

Topmüller, the son of striker and former coach Klaus Topmüller, said he had been in contact with Nagelsmann throughout the second half and it was Nagelsmann from his sickbed who suggested bringing in Serge Gnabry, who helped Munich win the match.

“So proud of the team, the entire coaching staff and the team behind the team,” Nagelsmann said in a tweet. “You did a great job yesterday and were commissioned in the best possible way.”

He will almost certainly also be remotely involved in preparing the squad for the match against his former club Hoffenheim, who beat Bayern 4-1 at home last year but then thrashed 4-1 in Munich.

Hoffenheim is coached by Sebastian Hoeness, son of former Bayern striker Dieter Hoeness and nephew of former Bayern winger and president Uli Hoeness.

Hoeness also issued good wishes but remained vague as to whether Nagelsmann’s absence would have an effect.

“I think in general it is better if the coach is present at the touchline,” Hoeness said.
