Geneva, June 14 (BNA) FC Barcelona is promoting the UNHCR logo on the back of its shirts for the next four seasons, as part of a partnership announced on Tuesday.
The agreement comes after UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, said recently that 100 million people have been forced to flee conflict, violence, human rights abuses and persecution.
Barcelona handed sponsorship space on its jerseys to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees rather than selling it to a commercial entity despite the club owing 1.3 billion euros ($1.3 billion), according to the Associated Press.
“I am sure that our fans and members – the owners of the club – are very happy with this global alliance with UNHCR because we have shown the world our hearts,” said Barcelona President Joan Laporta. “We showed the world our soul.”
Barcelona’s men have not won any titles in two of the past three seasons. “We want Barcelona to be a successful club and we want Barcelona to be financially healthy, that is clear,” UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said alongside Laporta at a press conference. “This does not conflict with having a social conscience.”
