Barcelona reaches agreement to sign Koundé from Sevilla

Barcelona, July 28 (BUS): Xavi Hernandez managed to remove the last item from his wish list after Barcelona sealed a deal for France defender Jules Conde on Thursday.

Barcelona said that Sevilla had agreed to transfer the hugely popular centre-back for an as yet undisclosed amount. The deal will be completed after the 23-year-old Condé undergoes a medical examination.

Conde, who has also intrigued Chelsea, will provide the Barcelona coach with a skilled and multi-talented defender as the team tries to move beyond the defensive line still led by 35-year-old Gerard Pique.

The France international will join Ronald Araujo (23) and Eric Garcia (21) to be Barcelona’s young heart playing with Pique, according to the Associated Press.

Conde will be Barcelona’s third major signing having sold 25% of La Liga TV rights over the next 25 years, as they both try to work their way out of staggering debts and rebuild a competitive side after winning nothing last season.

Xavi had asked club president Joan Laporta to get an outstanding striker and a good defender to bring his team back to the competition for titles.

Barcelona already this month secured the transfer of striker Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich and winger Ravenga from Leeds for around 110 million euros ($111 million).

Spanish sports media reported that Conde’s deal could cost Barcelona another 50 million euros ($50.8 million).

Quick in defense and attacking from set-pieces, Conde has been one of the most promising young players in his position in La Liga since joining Sevilla in 2019 for €25 million ($25.4 million) from French club Bordeaux.
