Barakah nuclear power plant 2023-2026 operational plan approved



Abu Dhabi, Nov. 28 (BNA): The Board of Directors of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation in the United Arab Emirates approved the authority’s operational plan 2023-2026 for the period that covers its future plan in regulating the nuclear and radiological sectors in the United Arab Emirates. FANR plans to implement a number of strategic projects and initiatives that focus on implementing control activities related to the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, research and development, regulatory framework, and strengthening national and international cooperation, among other projects.

The board has been updated by FANR management on the four units of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, where Units 1 and 2 operate and deliver electricity 24/7, and Unit 3 undergoes a series of tests in preparation for commercial operation.

The Board commended FANR’s regular oversight and inspections to ensure that the nuclear power plant complies with regulatory requirements.

The Board of Directors was also briefed on the authority’s plan to implement research and development activities in cooperation with national and international stakeholders.

R&D activities will focus on capacity building of UAE nationals and direct support for safety rules for the operation of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, establishment of a robust decommissioning infrastructure, radioactive waste management and spent nuclear fuel management as well as environmental protection.
