BA cancels short-haul Heathrow flights amid technical woes

London, Feb 27 (BNA): British Airways canceled dozens of flights from Heathrow Airport on Saturday as it struggled to fix “technical issues” hampering its reservation and check-in systems.

The airline has canceled all short-haul flights from the airport until midday. She said there were likely to be delays on long flights and that there was likely to be “more disruption during the day” at Heathrow, Gatwick and London City airports.

British Airways advised customers to check the website for the latest flight information before heading to the airports. The airline’s online departures board showed further cancellations throughout the day.

The airline said the problems were caused by a hardware issue and not by a cyber attack, the Associated Press reported.

The British Airways website and app were inaccessible for hours on Friday evening, preventing customers from checking in online or booking flights.

Several times in the past few years, British Airways has had problems with check-in systems that have resulted in hundreds of flights being canceled and thousands of people stranded.

“Ongoing technical issues do not fill consumers with much confidence,” said Paul Charles, CEO of travel consultancy The PC Agency.

He said: “British Airways must be transparent about the causes of these problems and when they will be resolved as soon as possible.”
