Avalanche in northern Pakistan kills 11 members of nomadic tribe

Islamabad, May 27 (BNA): The Pakistani police announced that an avalanche killed 11 people, including a 4-year-old child, and injured 25 people from a Bedouin tribe while they were crossing a mountainous area with their herds of goats.

The avalanche hit the nomads of the Chambili district of the Shounter Pass that connects the Astore district of Gilgit-Baltistan to the neighboring region of Azad Kashmir.

Gilgit-Baltistan police officer Zirat Ali said the dead included four women and a 4-year-old boy.

Ali said the nomads were taking their herds of goats on foot from the Kale district of Azad Kashmir to Astor, when they got caught in an avalanche in the early morning hours.

Tufail Mir, deputy police chief in the area, said rescuers are having problems reaching the avalanche-hit area and that the troops are helping local authorities, the Associated Press reports.
