Australian man killed by shark at popular beach in New Caledonia

Bangkok, Feb. 20 (BNA): An Australian tourist was killed after being attacked by a shark in the French territory of New Caledonia in the South Pacific Ocean.

Local radio 1ère Nouvelle Calédonie reported that the man was swimming 150 meters from a crowded beach in the capital, Noumea, when he was attacked and bitten by a shark several times on Sunday afternoon.

The radio said that two rescuers took him to the beach on jet skis, but all attempts to revive him failed, due to the severity of the injuries in his legs.

In the aftermath of the attack, Mayor Sonia Lagarde ordered all beaches in and around Noumea closed until further notice, according to a statement released on Monday.

Drones have been deployed to locate the shark. It was not clear at first what kind of shark attacked the man.
