Arsenal sign Porto midfielder Vieira

London, June 22 (BNA) Arsenal Football Club announced that it has signed attacking midfielder Fabio Vieira from Portuguese Premier League champion Porto.

Porto said last week that it had agreed a 40 million-euro ($42.11 million) deal with Arsenal to transfer Vieira, Reuters reported.

Porto added that Arsenal would initially pay 35 million euros with another five million, depending on Vieira’s achievement of certain goals at the London club.

The 22-year-old scored seven goals and made 16 assists in 39 matches in all competitions last season, as Porto won the league and cup titles. He also represented Portugal at the under-21 level, scoring 13 goals in 21 matches.

“Fabio is a very creative player who will bring high quality and versatility to our offensive play,” coach Mikel Arteta said in a statement.

Vieira follows Brazilian striker Marquinhos and American goalkeeper Matt Turner in joining Arsenal during the closing season.

Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League last season and lost in the Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
