Arsenal loses in Europa League, Man United advances to QF

Lisbon, March 17 (BNA): Arsenal’s hopes of achieving a European title ended with the elimination of the English Premier League leaders from the European League at the hands of Sporting Lisbon on penalties.

Lisbon reached the quarter-finals by winning 5-3 in a penalty shootout at the Emirates Stadium after a 1-1 draw in regulation in the second leg of the round of 16. The first leg ended 2-2. Gabriel Martinelli failed to convert from the penalty spot for Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Manchester United qualified for the quarter-finals after beating Real Betis 1-0, according to the Associated Press.

Arsenal dominated extra time as playmaker Martin Odegaard came on as a substitute but Sporting goalkeeper Antonia Adan made some stunning saves to force a penalty shootout.

Manuel Ugarte was sent off two minutes before the end of extra time after receiving his second yellow card.

Granit Xhaka gave Arsenal the lead in the first half with a rebound to complete a flowing move by the hosts. Martinelli fired his effort into the goal by Adan, but the ball entered the path of Arsenal captain Xhaka, who shot it into the net from inside the area.

Pedro Gonçalves equalized on the hour to spark the visitors’ attack and force extra time.
