Andy Murray accepts wild-card entry to Australian Open

Melbourne, Dec. 23 (BUS): Five-time Australian Open runner-up Andy Murray got an unexpected ticket Thursday in the tournament’s main draw, the Associated Press reported.

Murray last played at Melbourne Park in 2019, when he announced his retirement in tears before undergoing a second hip surgery to extend his career.

The former top-ranked Murray also agreed to enter the wild card last year, but did not go after testing positive for COVID-19 shortly before he was due on a charter flight to Melbourne.

“Andy is known for his fighting spirit, passion and love of the game and I am delighted to welcome him back to Melbourne in January,” said Australian Open director Craig Tilley. The Australian Open starts on January 17th.

Murray, ranked 134th in the ATP rankings, spoke optimistically about deepening the tournaments once again after defeating Yannick Sener to reach the quarter-finals of the Stockholm Open in November. Stefanos also pushed Tsitsipas to five sets in a first-round loss at the US Open in August.

The three-time Grand Slam champion said he was “really excited” to be back at the Australian Open. “I’ve had a great time in Australia playing in front of an amazing crowd, and I can’t wait to get back on the field at Melbourne Park,” said the 34-year-old.
