Amazon to invest $972M for electric vans, trucks in Europe

Manama, October 10 (BNA) Amazon said today, Monday, that it will invest one billion euros ($972.1 million) to add thousands of electric trucks, long-range trucks and freight bikes to its delivery network in Europe.

The Seattle-based retail giant said in an announcement on its website that the investment would increase the number of the company’s electric delivery trucks in Europe from about 3,000 to 10,000 by 2025.

With the investment, Amazon is also hoping to buy more than 1,500 electric trucks, up from five in the UK, AP reports.

To accommodate these vehicles, the company said it will manufacture hundreds of fast chargers across its European facilities that can charge vehicles in about two hours.

“Our transportation network is one of the most challenging areas in our decarbonization business, and achieving net zero carbon will require a significant and sustainable investment,” Andy Gacy, Amazon CEO, said in a statement.

He noted the company’s pledge to be net carbon by 2040. Despite that pledge, the company said carbon emissions grew 18% last year, driven by online shopping during the coronavirus pandemic.
