Alonso fastest in rainy second practice at Australian Grand Prix

Melbourne, March 31 (BNA): Fernando Alonso topped the timetable for Aston Martin in the second rain-stricken free practice at the Australian Grand Prix on Friday after Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen was fastest in the dry first session.

Alonso accelerated a lap of 1 minute, 18.887 seconds on the medium tires before the rain hit and finished nearly half a second behind Ferrari’s second fastest Charles Leclerc, according to Reuters.

Red Bull’s Verstappen was third as fast as possible, ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell, but caution took precedence over speed and the conditions allowed for little meaningful sprinting.

Lewis Hamilton, the second fastest lap in the first session, only set 13th fastest lap in the second and spent much of it in the garage as engineers tinkered with his car.

Verstappen earlier topped the eventful first session (FP1) under blue skies, at 1 minute, 18.790 seconds, nearly half a second faster than Hamilton.
