Algeria’s wildfires death toll rises to 37

Algeria, Aug. 19 (BNA) The death toll from forest fires in Algeria has risen to 37, local An-Nahar TV reported Thursday, citing the Algerian Civil Protection Directorate.

The report added that the number of wounded also rose to 183.

The forest fires ignited in mountainous areas and the victims were from the El Tarf and Setif provinces in the eastern part of the arid and semi-arid country, the largest in Africa.

Most of the wildfires have been extinguished while some are under control, but firefighters and helicopters are still monitoring the provinces, officials said.

A year ago, Reuters said, at least 65 people were killed in forest fires in the Kabylie region.
