Ajax fires coach Alfred Schreuder after winless streak

AMSTERDAM, Jan. 27 (BNA): Ajax coach Alfred Schroeder has been sacked after just half a season in the Dutch powerhouse after a run of seven matches without a win for the four-time European champions.

Schroeder, who took over the team when Erik ten Hag departed for Manchester United, was sacked after his side drew only 1-1 at Volendam on Thursday night, with Ajax citing “disappointing results and a lack of development within the squad”.

“It’s a painful but necessary decision,” club director Edwin van der Sar said. “We had confidence in Alfred to turn things around. It became clear to us that he could not turn the tide.”

Ajax, the defending champions, is fifth in the Premier League, seven points behind league leaders Feyenoord, according to the Associated Press.
A replacement for Schroeder was not immediately announced.
