6.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Mexico, 2 dead

Mexico City, Sept. 22 (BNA): A strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Mexico early Thursday morning, killing at least two people, destroying buildings and landslides.

The earthquake occurred at 1:19 am near the epicenter with a magnitude of 7.6 That hit three days ago in the western state of Michoacan. It has also been blamed for two deaths, according to the Associated Press.

The epicenter of Thursday’s quake was in a sparsely populated area 31 miles (50 km) south-southwest of Aguila, Michoacan, at a depth of 15 miles (24.1 km), the US Geological Survey said.

The Michoacan state government said the quake was felt throughout the state. It reported damage to a building in Uruapan and some landslides on highways.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said via Twitter that the quake was a follow-up to Monday’s quake and was also felt in the states of Colima, Jalisco and Guerrero.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said via Twitter that two people have died – a woman who fell down the stairs of her home and a man who had a heart attack. Residents crowded the streets as an earthquake alarm sounded.
