5th victim found in train wreckage in southern Germany

Frankfurt, June 4 (BNA) Today, Saturday, German police said that the body of a fifth victim was found under a derailed train Friday in the Alps in southern Germany.

The man’s body was revealed after initial attempts to lift the derailed wagons failed. Rescue workers had to wait until a heavy crane was brought to the site near the resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The cause of the deviation from the track is still being investigated.

About 140 people were on the train at the time, including students who went home from school for the Whitsun vacation. Police in the southern region of Bavaria said 44 people were injured, according to the Associated Press.

The regional train to Munich derailed Friday afternoon in Burgren after it withdrew from the resort from which it departed.

Three of the double-decker vehicles have at least partially overturned and people have been taken out of the windows for safety.
