5.3 magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan’s east coast

Taipei, Mar. 21 (BNA): An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 struck the eastern coast of Taiwan, causing buildings to shake briefly in the capital, Taipei, the island’s meteorological bureau said.

There are no immediate reports of damage, Reuters reported.

The Meteorological Bureau said the epicenter was in the sparsely populated eastern province of Hualien, at a depth of 7.2 km.

Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.
