1 killed, 3 injured in fire at ferroalloy plant in Dangjin, South Korea

Seoul, Dec. 8 (BNA): A fire at a ferroalloy factory in the western city of Danjin, South Korea, killed a worker and injured three others, Yonhap news agency reported Thursday.

The fire started near an electronic furnace on the second floor of the plant operated by Simpac Metal at 7:40pm on Wednesday (SK time), killing a 50-year-old employee and injuring three others in their 20s, 40s and 50s respectively. . before being put out after about two and a half hours.

Authorities said they also incurred property damage estimated at 380 million won (US$287,835) by burning parts of the plant and its machinery.

Police and fire authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the fire.

The Department of Labor plans to open an investigation soon into whether Simpac violated the Industrial Safety and Health Act or the Serious Workplace Accident Penalty Act that penalizes CEOs or company owners for lax workplace safety measures resulting in the death of workers at companies with 50 or more employees.
