Without Haaland, 10-man Dortmund slump to 1-0 loss at Gladbach

Monchengladbach, Germany, September 26 (BNA): Borussia Moenchengladbach stunned hosts Borussia Dortmund with 10 players, with a 0-0 goal by Denis Zakaria, to achieve his triple victories in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund, who plays without their injured captain Marco Reus and striker Erling Haaland, lost their second loss this season, and fell to fourth place with 12 points, four points behind leaders Bayern Munich, to make Gladbach their second victory in six games.

Reuters reported that Haaland, who scored 47 goals in 48 league games for Dortmund, was ruled out earlier on Saturday after being injured in Friday’s final training session.

Zakaria shot in the 37th minute after entering the penalty area, got a lucky deflection to keep the ball and then scored the lead.

Things got worse for Dortmund, who host Sporting in the Champions League next week, three minutes later when Mo Daoud was ordered to walk after a second warning, sending his side to their feet and leaving defender Mats Hummels furious.

“It would be foolish to give the referee the opportunity (to send him off),” Hummels said of David’s opposition which led to a second booking after a foul. “I hope Mo knows that what he did was wrong.

“It’s wrong to send him off but you shouldn’t even give the referee the opportunity to do that.”

The hosts had a string of good chances in the second half after a frustrating return to Gladbach for Dortmund coach Marco Rose, who coached the team for two years but left this season to join the Ruhr Valley club.

The fans of the local team received him a warm welcome, with mocking whistles, after he angered them by announcing his departure in the middle of last season with the team, and then lost the European spots.

Rose’s team, without Haaland and Reuss in attack, failed to make a single attempt on goal over 90 minutes and slipped to fourth, one point behind third-placed Wolfsburg, who lost 3-1 to Hoffenheim and Bayer Leverkusen.

Gladbach rises to 11th place with seven points.
