Vatican says health of retired pope Benedict XVI ‘worsening’

Vatican, December 29 (BNA): Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s health has worsened over the past hours due to advanced age and that doctors are constantly monitoring his condition, the Vatican said Wednesday, at a time when Pope Francis appealed to the faithful to pray for him. His “very patient” predecessor to the end.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Francis went to visit 95-year-old Benedict at the convent on Vatican grounds where he has lived since his retirement in February 2013.

“With regard to the health condition of Pope Emeritus, for whom Pope Francis asked to be prayed at the end of his general audience this morning, I can confirm that in the last hours, there has been a deterioration due to age,” Bruni said in a written statement, the Associated Press reported.
