US State Secretary announces 3-Day ceasefire in Sudan

Washington, April 24 (BNA) US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that the warring factions in Sudan have agreed to a cease-fire that “starts at midnight on April 24 and lasts 72 hours.”

Blinken said the agreement between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces came “after intense negotiations over the past 48 hours.”

“The United States urges the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to immediately and fully adhere to the ceasefire,” Blinken said.

“To support a permanent end to the fighting, the United States will coordinate with regional and international partners, and Sudanese civilian stakeholders, to help establish a committee to oversee the negotiation, conclusion, and implementation of a permanent cessation of hostilities and humanitarian arrangements in Sudan.”

The Rapid Support Forces said in a written statement on Monday that it agreed to the truce “in order to open humanitarian corridors, facilitate the movement of citizens and residents, enable them to meet their needs, reach hospitals and safe areas, and evacuate diplomatic missions.”

Previously agreed ceasefires have collapsed, though brief lulls in the fighting allowed foreign civilians to evacuate Sudan to safety, according to the Associated Press.
