US beats Ecuador in injury time at U20 World Cup opener

Buenos Aires, May 20 (BNA): A stoppage-time explosion led the United States to a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in one of the opening matches of the Under-20 World Cup today, Saturday.

After a bit of inspiration from both San Juan teams, left-back Jonathan Gomez fired from the edge of the box a minute before the final whistle to beat goalkeeper Gilmar Napa.

The other two teams in Group B, Slovakia and Fiji, played each other late Saturday, reports the Associated Press.

Until Gomez won, it was the best chance an hour later from an embarrassing mistake by Ecuador’s Napa. His clearance hit his defender Cristian Garcia in the face. The ball fell to American striker Diego Luna, who shot wide despite the empty goal.

Ecuador, the team of young striker Kindry Paez, never had a shot on goal.

The first goal of the tournament came from New Zealand, with Norman Garbett scoring the only goal in the 80th minute to defeat Guatemala in their first group match.
