UK’s Sunak says plan stopping small migrant boats is working

London, June 6 (BNA): British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Monday that his plan to stop migrants arriving by small boat has cut their crossings by 20%, an update he hopes will soften criticism from his party and in the country over immigration policy.

Sunak, who is expected to lead his ruling Conservative party in a general election next year, promised to “stop the boats” from crossing the English Channel as one of his five pledges after coming to power in October last year, Reuters reported. .

“In the five months since the scheme was launched, crossings are now down 20% compared to last year,” Sunak told a news conference in southern England.

“The plan is working,” he said, adding that his government is not complacent and will work hard to make sure parliament passes a new law.
