UEFA hits England with stadium closure for Euro 2020 chaos

Nyon, Oct 18 (BNA) – The European Football Association (UEFA) on Monday ordered England’s national team to play one match with the men’s national team in an empty stadium as punishment for the chaos around Wembley Stadium in the European Championship final in July.

The stadium closure will apply to a Nations League match in June. A second game in an empty stadium has been postponed by two years for a probationary period, according to the Associated Press.

Thousands of English fans tried to break through the barriers to reach Wembley, which was hosting the Euro 2020 final against Italy with a capacity of around two-thirds due to restrictions in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The FA was also fined 100,000 euros ($118,000) for fan violence and other incidents in and around the stadium, including disturbances during the playing of the Italian national anthem in the semi-finals.

England, in their first major final in 55 years, lost to Italy on penalties after a 1-1 draw
