Successful nephrectomy performed at King Hamad University hospital

Manama, September 5 (BNA) A team from King Hamad University Hospital removed the right kidney of a seven-month-old baby.

The team, led by Chief of Staff of King Fahd University Hospital Hospital and Consultant Pediatric Surgeon Professor Martin Corbally, performed a rare resection (nephrectomy) for the baby girl.

“The girl was suffering from severe swelling in the right side,” Professor Corbali said, noting that examinations showed the presence of 50 ml of Wilms’ carcinoma in the right kidney, which is large compared to the age of the infant.

The first child does chemotherapy to reduce the size of the tumor to avoid bleeding during surgery or rupture of the tumor, provided that the resection is done after six weeks.

The medical team decided to perform the surgery immediately due to the child’s health condition and the spread of the cancer to the kidneys. The doctors also concluded that the chemotherapy may expose the girl to future complications due to her age.

The surgeons performed a radical nephrectomy, in which the child lost only 5 ml of blood, which is very small compared to other resections, due to the use of the latest technology to prevent bleeding during surgery.

“The surgery was performed without any side effects and the patient recovered within a few days of undergoing the surgery,” Professor Corbally said. .
