‘Squid Game’ wins three nominations at Critics Choice Awards

Seoul, Dec. 7 (BUS): South Korean survival drama “Squid Game” has been nominated in three categories, including Best Drama Series, at the 27th Critics’ Choice Awards.

According to the nominations announced by the Critics’ Choice Association on Monday (US time), “Squid Game,” an original from Netflix, was included in the categories of Best Dramatic Series, Best Actor in a Dramatic Series, and Best Foreign Language Series, according to South Korean news. Agency (Yonhap).

In the Best Drama Series section, “Squid Game” will compete against seven other nominees, including HBO’s “Succession,” NBC’s “This Is Us,” and Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.”

Its lead, Lee Jong Jae, earned a nomination for Best Actor in a Drama Series, as the only non-English speaking actor, alongside Sterling K. Brown for This Is Us, Mike Coulter for Evil, Brian Cox and Jeremy. Strong from “The Caliphate” and Billy Porter from “Bose”.

“Squid Game” is also among six nominees for Best Foreign Language Series by Mexican comedy “Acapulco” and French comedy-drama Call My Agent! and “French thriller ‘Lupine’, ‘Money Heist’ and Mexican American crime drama. ‘Narcos: Mexico’.”

The nine-part series about contestants competing in killer playground games for kids in Korea to win prize money of 45.6 billion won (US$38.5 million) has become the most successful TV show in Netflix history with over 1.65 billion hours of viewership in the first four weeks after that. Meanwhile, “Succession” topped the annual Critics’ Choice Awards nominees with a total of eight nods, followed by “Mary of Easttown” and “Evil” with five nods each.

“Squid Game” became the first South Korean TV show to receive a nomination at the Critics Choice Awards, a major party held during award season in the United States.

Bong Joon Ho’s brilliant “Parasite” won two titles, Best Director and Best Foreign Language Film, at the 25th edition.

Last year, South Korean actress Yoon Yeoh-jung was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the immigration movie “Minari”, but failed to win.

The winners of the 2022 Critics’ Choice Awards will be announced on January 9 next year.
