Somalia president calls for lifting arms embargo

Mogadishu, Jan. 30 (BNA): Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud received the US representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, who is currently on a working visit in the country.

The President briefed her on the general situation in Somalia, in particular the ongoing military operations across the country against terrorist militias linked to Al Qaeda.

He referred to the challenge posed by the arms embargo imposed on Somalia, which impedes the rebuilding of the army and accelerates the eradication of terrorism, according to the SUNA news agency.

He expressed hope that the representative to the United Nations would support the federal government’s efforts to lift the arms embargo imposed on the country.

“In a fruitful discussion with the US representative to the United Nations in Mogadishu today, we discussed state-building efforts in Somalia, including progress in the areas of security, strengthening our state institutions and critical US support for Somalia,” the president wrote in a statement.
