Kathmandu, Nov. 9 (BNA): A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, killing at least six people, destroying many homes in western Dhoti district and shaking India’s capital, New Delhi.

Five more people were seriously injured in the collapse of eight houses, the deputy commissioner of police in Dhoti said, confirming an earlier figure cited by an Interior Ministry official, according to Reuters.

Local media showed pictures of mud and brick houses destroyed by the earthquake and rescue workers digging through the rubble in search of survivors. A Nepalese army spokesman said at least two people were missing.

Nepal is still rebuilding after two major earthquakes in 2015 killed nearly 9,000 people, destroyed entire towns and centuries-old temples and dealt a $6 billion blow to the economy.

Spokesman Silwal said Nepal Army’s ground rescue team has rushed to the site, and two helicopters were on standby in the nearby towns of Surkhet and Nepalgunj.

The Nepal Seismological Center put the quake at a magnitude of 6.6. The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) had associated the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6.

The center added that the quake was centered about 158 km northeast of the densely populated city of Bilibet in the neighboring Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Media reports after the quake showed that a tremor was also felt in New Delhi and surrounding areas, 350 kilometers (220 miles) from Doty.
