Singapore victory was Perez’s best drive yet, says Horner

Singapore, Oct. 3 (BNA) Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner said Sergio Perez’s victory in the Singapore Grand Prix was “world class” and his best F1 drive to date.

The race ended with Perez subject to an investigation by the hosts for possible car safety violations, but with a five-second penalty that made no difference to the score, Reuters reports.

“This is without a doubt the best motivation of his career,” Horner told Sky Sports, with Perez’s championship teammate Max Verstappen only seventh after five straight wins.

“Tough conditions, he made the start, changed the start, stabilized the race, took care of those intermediate tires, safety cars coming and going, restarting, always in control, so great.

“That’s world class, that’s right there. This is definitely his best victory, I think even surpassing his victory in Monaco and under tremendous pressure he went out and delivered. Just fantastic, very proud of him. He did a great job.”

The win was Perez’s fourth career and third since the 32-year-old joined Red Bull in 2021 when it looked like his Formula One career was reaching the end of the road.

He agreed with Horner’s assessment.

“I think it was definitely my best performance,” Perez told reporters. “I dominated the race…the last few laps were very intense.”

“I didn’t feel that much in the car but when I got out of it, I felt it. You know, I pushed. I did everything to win today.”

The Mexican poured more water on his head than he drank in the cold room before climbing to the top of the platform.

“This win is really special for me, because I’ve had some difficulties in the last few races,” he said, referring to recent media coverage.

“If I’m not two straight races on the podium, then I’m having the worst season ever and Red Bull has to take me down and all that kind of thing you can see.

“It’s not a reminder to anyone how good I am. But it’s always nice to be able to put together that kind of show.”

Perez won this year’s Monaco Grand Prix, another tight street race where the fewest mistakes can come at a hefty price, but he has finished fifth and sixth in the previous two races while Verstappen has dominated.

Starting in the front row with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in pole position, he grabbed the lead at the start and finished with a 7.5sec advantage.
