Seoul’s daily COVID-19 infections hit 10,000 for first time



Seoul, Feb. 9 (BNA): The daily number of new COVID-19 infections in Seoul reached 11,682 on Wednesday, the first ever number above 10,000 since the country’s first case was recorded two years ago, according to city officials.


The daily COVID-19 toll in the capital has been increasing rapidly with the rapid spread of the omicron variant, as it first reached the 5,000 level a week ago and repeatedly renewed its record to surpass the 8,000 level last Saturday, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.


Of the latest total, 11,630 cases were referred locally, and the remaining 52 cases were received from abroad.


The city had a backlog of 337,930 cases as of midnight Wednesday, while 102,058 citizens were under quarantine due to COVID-19 infections.


The death toll reached three on Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths from COVID-19 in the city to 2,212, according to city officials.


The country overall has reported 49,567 new COVID-19 infections per day, the first time the daily number has crossed the 40,000 level, amid a surge in omicron transmissions.
