Second ‘black box’ found in China Eastern plane crash

Beijing, March 27 (BNA): The second “black box” of a Boeing 737-800 aircraft was found in eastern China Sunday, raising hopes that it might shed light on why the passenger plane landed in a remote mountainous region in southern China last week. As a result, all 132 people on board were killed.

State media said firefighters involved in the search found the flight data recorder on a mountain slope, 40 meters (130 feet) from the impact point and 1.5 meters underground.

Experts confirmed that it is the second black box. The impact caused a 20-meter (65-foot) deep crater in the side of the mountain and the debris was scattered widely, according to the Associated Press.

Researchers were searching for the data recorder after finding the cockpit voice recorder four days ago.

The two black boxes should help investigators determine why the plane descended from 29,000 feet (8,800 meters) about one hour into the flight and shortly before it began its descent.

The remote setting and rainy and muddy conditions complicated the search for black boxes and debris.

Images released by CGTN, the international arm of CCTV, showed an official carrying an orange cylindrical object at the site marked “FLIGHT RECORDER” and “NO OPENING”. It looked a little dented, but it was intact.
