Seoul, Feb. 5 (BNA): Rescue teams of the South Korean Coast Guard are searching today, Sunday, for nine people whose boat capsized in the waters off the southwestern coast of South Korea.

Authorities said it was reported at 11:19 p.m. on Saturday that the 24-tonne ship capsized in the waters 16.6 km west of Daibichi Island. The uninhabited island is located about 20 km southwest of Sinan County.

Yonhap said a total of 12 people, including three foreigners, were on board the ship.

Authorities said three crew members were rescued by a nearby boat and taken to hospital.
However, nine others are still missing.

Oceans Minister Cho Seung-hwan, while meeting with the families of the missing in Sinan, said that they were apparently on board the ship at the time of the accident. He added that most of those who went missing appeared to have been forced from the ship, retracting an earlier assumption that they were locked inside.

The minister said the search has been expanded to survey a larger area by deploying not only Coast Guard and Navy boats but also nearby fishing boats.

The Navy said it deployed ships, aircraft and members of the Sea Rescue and Rescue Unit (SSU) to assist in the operation.
President Yoon Seok Yul earlier urged maximum efforts to search for and rescue the missing.

Presidential spokeswoman Kim Un Hee said he had ordered the mobilization of all available resources by expanding the search and rescue area.

He also stressed the need for the families of the missing to be fully supported, Kim added, as he ordered Cho and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min to be sent to the site.
