Seoul, Dec. 5 (BNA): Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. on Monday promoted an executive to head of global marketing for its mobile business, in the first move to tap female talent for the top position.

Lee Young-hee has been promoted to Head of Global Marketing Center for Samsung’s Device Experience (DX) division that oversees the mobile device business, Yonhap reports.

She is the first female chairwoman of Samsung, the country’s largest conglomerate, to come from outside the founding family.

Lee Bo-jin, the first daughter of the late Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Kun-hee, is currently the president and CEO of Shilla Hotel, a Samsung subsidiary.

Lee Young-hee joined the tech giant in 2007 and was promoted to Vice President in 2012. She previously worked at L’Oreal, and has been credited with successfully promoting the image and brand of Samsung’s Galaxy mobile phones.

Samsung expected the promotion to be an opportunity for other talented female employees to challenge themselves to climb the career ladder.

She is among seven new chairmen, part of a small-scale corporate reshuffle made for the first time since the group’s de facto leader Lee Jae-yong was elevated to the company’s chief executive officer in October.

Samsung has not named a new head of its home appliances unit, a position that has remained vacant since Lee Jae-Seung’s resignation in October due to undisclosed “personal reasons”.

Samsung said Han Jung-hee, vice president and co-CEO of Samsung, will continue to take on the additional role after Lee’s departure for the time being.
