S. Korea’s virus caseload surpasses grim milestone of 500,000

SEOUL, Dec. 10 (BNA): South Korea’s novel coronavirus cases remained above 7,000 for the third day in a row on Friday and the number of cases topped the bleak mark of 500,000 as the coronavirus continued to spread unabated among unvaccinated adults and vulnerable elderly people immunity.

The country reported 7,022 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of cases to 503,606, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency said the figure was the third-highest daily total for the epidemic, after a record high of 7,174 on Wednesday and 7,102 the day before.

Of the total, Seoul reported 2,800 new cases, while 2,030 came from surrounding Gyeonggi Province and 465 from Incheon, 40 kilometers west of Seoul.

The number of critically ill COVID-19 patients reached 852, the second-highest number after the 857 patients reported on Thursday, adding pressure on hospitals and intensive care units.

The authorities said the death toll rose 53 to 4,130. The death rate was 0.82%.
