Runaway leaders Napoli close on title with last-gasp win at Juve

Turin, April 24 (BNA): Striker Giacomo Raspadori scored in stoppage time to give Napoli a 1-0 victory over Juventus on Sunday, putting them on the brink of achieving their first Serie A title since 1990 after the owners won the earth. Two goals were ruled out after the VAR review.

According to Reuters, Raspadori came off the bench to move Napoli 17 points away with 78 points and could claim his third title in the Italian League next weekend if he beat Salernitana and second-placed Lazio failed to beat Inter Milan.

Juventus, who returned to the top four after canceling the deduction of 15 points from the club’s transfer deals, on Thursday pending a new hearing, is in third place with 59 points, two points behind second-placed Lazio, who lost to Turin on Saturday.

A goalless first half saw the Juventus defense allowing Napoli to enjoy the lion’s share of possession, waiting for opportunities to counter-attack. The approach did not result in many chances for both sides and Juventus managed to hit only three shots on goal.

Napoli’s first attempt in the second half came five minutes into the second half from winger Khavisa Kvaratskhelia, but goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny managed to keep his low shot.

Life came back to life with 20 minutes remaining when Napoli came close to taking the lead through striker Victor Osimhen who shot inches from the post.

A minute later, Osimhen arrived from a corner kick but headed it into the arms of Szczesny and soon after, Serie A’s top scorer of the season, narrowly sent the ball over the crossbar.

Visibly fired up, Juventus thought they had taken the lead with a stunning individual effort from Ángel Di Maria in the 82nd minute only for it to be ruled out after a VAR check by Arkadiusz Milik faced Napoli midfielder Stanislav Lobotka in the build-up.

Then late substitute Dusan Vlahovic scored for Juventus in stoppage time, but his attempts were also ruled out because the ball went wide before Federico Chiesa’s cross.

Napoli secured their eighth consecutive league victory away from home with Raspadori, who beat Szczesny with a superb cross from midfielder Eljiv Elmas.

“I congratulated the team because they put in a good game after being knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday, which is always exciting because you have a lot of ideas and you carry some fatigue with you,” Spalletti told DAZN.

It was hard to do more than that today.”

Juventus suffered their first three-game losing streak in Serie A since 2011 after losing 1-0 to Sassuolo saw them suffer back-to-back defeats in the league for the first time this season. They have not won five of their last six matches in all competitions.

“We played a good match against the strong Napoli,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said.

“It wasn’t easy to spend four months in these conditions finding the energy and focus to get results,” he added, referring to the points deduction imposed in January.
