Retegui a bright note as Azzurri again fail to shine

Rome, March 27 (BNA): Matteo Rettigi’s impressive appearance for Italy has added some sheen to what was already a mediocre performance from the reigning champions at the start of the European Championship qualifiers.

Less than two years after beating England on penalties to win Euro 2020, Italy began their campaign to reach Euro 2024 with a 2-1 loss at home to the same opposition on Thursday.

The Osiris followed that up with a 2-0 win over Malta on Sunday, but there is a lot to improve on, reports the Associated Press.

The first Euro 2024 qualifiers took place more than three months after the World Cup, for which Italy did not qualify again.

After Italy failed to reach the 2018 World Cup, the Azzurri stormed into qualifying for Euro 2020. They won all ten of their matches, scoring 37 goals and conceding only four.

Then Mancini’s team went on to win the tournament and Italy’s revival seemed complete.

But the Azzurri’s recent performances have raised doubts about whether Italy’s victory was really a return to the top or an anomaly fueled by the passion and fervor of a country recovering from being one of the hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Sporting successes that year were dominated by the Italians.
