Princess Diana’s unique Ford Escort fetches $850,000 at auction

London, Aug. 28 (BNA) The late Princess Diana’s Ford Escort RS Turbo Series 1 car fetched 724,500 pounds ($851,070) at an auction at Silverstone Racecourse in Britain on Saturday.

Silverstone’s website describes the car as the last Ford Escort for the Princess of Wales, with 24,961 miles on the clock. It was owned by the Princess of Wales between 1985 and 1988.

The Princess was often seen driving around Chelsea and Kensington and clocked 6,800 miles before being brought back to Ford. After the return, the car had several owners before returning to Ford, according to the Silverstone website.

Reuters reported that the site did not name the winner of the auction.

The RS Turbo Series 1 is usually built in white, but the royal family’s police guard asked for the Diana to be painted black “for the sake of discreetness,” the auctioneers said.

Arwel Richards, a classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions, said earlier this week that Princess driving was a “very brave choice”.

Next week marks 25 years since Diana, aged 36, died when a passenger limousine crashed into a Paris tunnel as it was away from paparazzi chasing motorbikes.
