Oil Minister visits ASRY

Manama, June 15 (BNA): Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Dinah, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, emphasized the role of the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Company (ASRY) in positioning Bahrain as a regional hub for ship recycling.

During a visit to ASRY, the minister said that ASRY development is in line with Bahrain’s efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals at the national, regional and international levels.

The minister indicated that the Supreme Council for the Environment, within the limits of its ability to support sustainability goals, supervises that the operations of recycling ships and marine vessels are carried out in accordance with environmental standards and best practices.

ASRY had announced that it would include ship dismantling and recycling as one of its core activities, after achieving all the requirements of the three international environmental standards groups that regulate ship recycling activities. These are the Hong Kong International Convention for Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling, the European Union Ship Recycling Regulation, and the ISO 30000 Ship Recycling Management Systems Standard.
