Washington, July 1 (BNA) UNESCO member states have supported the United States’ return to the United Nations cultural organization, nearly five years after President Donald Trump ordered the US withdrawal, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.
“I am grateful and encouraged that (UNESCO) members today agreed to our proposal, which will allow the United States to take the next formal steps toward full accession to the organization,” Blinken said in a statement.
The US State Department indicated in a letter dated June 8 that it wants to rejoin UNESCO in July as a full member and that it intends to pay back $619 million in arrears in installments over several years, Reuters reports.
Blinken said on Friday that member states agreed to return the United States in an extraordinary session this week.
