Murray withdraws before match against Djokovic in Madrid

Madrid, May 5 (BNA) Andy Murray withdrew from his confrontation with Novak Djokovic in the Madrid Open on Thursday due to a stomach ailment.

The announcement came shortly before the Murray Courts were scheduled to play top-ranked Djokovic in the third round.

It was the first time Murray and Djokovic had played against each other since Djokovic won the Doha final in 2017, according to the Associated Press.

Murray had won his first two matches in Madrid, beating Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov. The former top seed has not won back-to-back matches since January and has not played in the claycourt championships in nearly two years.

Ranked 78 in the world, the 34-year-old Murray has been working his way up the rankings since undergoing hip surgery in both 2018 and 2019. He has arrived in Madrid with a 10-8 in eight tournaments. He lost the Sydney final to Aslan Karatsev in January.
