Leverkusen beats Bayern 2-1 to leave Dortmund top

Berlin, March 19 (BNA): Amin Adly was booked twice for diving, the yellow card was disallowed both times, and Bayer Leverkusen scored twice from the resulting penalty shootout to defeat Bayern Munich 2-1 Sunday. This win made Borussia Dortmund top of the Bundesliga.

Referee Tobias Steiler received thanks — twice — after getting the order wrong, reports the Associated Press.

He apologized to Adly on every occasion after consulting the replay which showed that the French player had been fouled first by Benjamin Pavard, then by Dayot Uppicano.

Exekel Palacios scored both penalties to end Bayern’s four-game winning streak in all competitions and leave Dortmund one point clear with nine rounds remaining. Bayern Munich hosts Dortmund next on April 1.

Leverkusen threatened more in the early stages, with Bayern relying on goalkeeper Jan Sommer to deny Kerem Demirbay and Alfonso Davies the removal of Jeremy Frimpong.

Joshua Kimmich scored Bayern’s first attack in the 22nd minute. Deflecting the ball past a helpless Lukáš Hrádecký past Leverkusen.

Then Pavard conceded his first penalty. Stieler initially booked Adly for diving, then changed his mind after watching video replays showing how Pavard buttoned up his compatriot’s boot.

In fact, Adly lost his shoe and threw it on the ground in frustration after being booked. But Stieler pulled a yellow card after seeing the replay.
