Leonard has 35 points, Clippers outlast Knicks 134-128 in OT

New York, Feb. 5 (BNA): Kawhi Leonard scored 35 points, Paul George added 30, and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the New York Knicks 134-128 in overtime on Saturday night.

After the Clippers lost a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter, Nicholas Batum’s three-pointer at the regulation buzzer tied it with 115, the Associated Press reports.

“Hopefully we can finish the game in the fourth quarter by throwing some punches to keep the teams out,” Clippers coach Tyrone Law said. “But, big shot from Neko. A bold win by us. Neko makes the big shot and we controlled overtime.”

The Clippers scored the first four points of overtime and never relinquished the lead. Leonard hit all eight of his free throws in the extra session, finishing with 12-for-12 from the streak.

“We have to do better,” Leonard said. “Second night in a row we’ve got a huge lead against this good team and they’re coming back. They fought inside of them and we have to be able to shut them down.”

Norman Powell added 24 points for the Clippers, Marcus Morris Sr. added 17, and Los Angeles won seven of nine.

Jalen Brunson, who returned after missing a game due to a non-COVID illness, led the Knicks with 41 points. Julius Randel was 28 years old.

Powell’s players gave the Flyers a 17-point lead to open the fourth quarter, and the Clippers still led 106-94 after Powell’s throw with 7:18 remaining.

But, Quentin Grimes’ three-pointer with 52 seconds remaining gave the Knicks their first lead, 113-112, and Bronson capped a 21-6 lead with a layup with 18 seconds left in the game.

George missed a three-pointer with eight seconds left, but Ivica Zubak got the offensive rebound and Batum made a three-pointer at the buzzer.

“As a team, if we hadn’t started the way we did and played Knicks basketball, we wouldn’t be in this position,” Bronson said. “I’m proud of the way we fought. I’m not too worried about anything. The biggest thing I take away from this match is that my teammates fought. We’ll move on from that.”
