Just like dad: Giovanni Simeone making his mark in Serie A

Rome, Oct. 30 (BUS): Giovanni Simeone is finally beginning to step out of his father’s shadow in Serie A, according to an Associated Press report.

The son of Diego Simeone, the former Argentina international and current coach of Atletico Madrid, scored twice as Hellas Verona beat struggling Juventus 2-1 on Saturday.

Simeone the Younger spends a whole week. He also scored all four goals in Verona’s 4-1 win over Lazio – one of his father’s former teams – last Sunday.

“My dad did what he does and I do my own,” said the 26-year-old Simeone. “Every day, every year, he’s getting more and more mature.

“I’ve found the right balance and everything is working fine now.”

Simeone now has eight goals in 10 games this season, leaving only Lazio’s Cerro Immobile (nine goals) behind on the Serie A scoring chart. He also scored two goals against Juventus with Genoa and Cagliari.

Meanwhile, Juventus now has as many losses (four) as it won. The Bianconeri, who are struggling to regroup after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Manchester United, lost to Sassuolo on Wednesday after conceding a late goal.

The result left Juventus in ninth place, equal with Verona in points, and 13 points behind leaders Napoli and AC Milan, who play on Sunday.

Simeone’s first goal came in the 11th minute when he redirected it in a rebound from Antonin Barak’s shot.

Three minutes later, Simeone curled a long shot from outside the 18-yard area into the far corner.

Weston McKinney cut the difference for Juventus 10 minutes before the end of time to score his second goal in as many matches. The US international was left unmarked in the center of the area to fire a shot into the roof of the net.

Nikola Kalinic almost added again for Verona in the closing minutes, then Verona goalkeeper Lorenzo Montepo made the stunning jump to free an excellent curling ball from Paulo Dybala.
