In Bahrain, voting is equitable; no barriers to the ballot

Manama, Nov. 19 (BNA): Some of the most amazing and enduring images of the 2022 parliamentary and municipal elections will certainly be those of voters with disabilities being assisted by judges in casting their ballots.

Such scenes were seen in several polling stations as Bahrainis voted in the first round on November 12 and in the second round on November 19.

Police and community police officers were prompt in assisting voters with disabilities when they were taken to polling stations, ensuring there was a parking space in the vicinity and assisting them inside. Wheelchairs were arranged, whenever they were needed, and special care was taken.

Inside the polling station, the judge or assistant came up to them and offered to assist in every possible capacity. The process was humane, friendly, smooth and encouraging. An impressive act of sympathy and support stemming from a true Bahraini way of life.

The scene is different under another sky. Voters with disabilities often face daunting challenges in casting a ballot. Many cumbersome procedures make it difficult or even impossible for voters to cast their ballots.

In some places, laws criminalize the act of helping voters with disabilities to vote, and stark restrictions burden the right to vote for people with disabilities.

Bahrain has incorporated Bahraini character and values into the exercise of one of the noblest forms of democracy – voting.

The kingdom has embraced more humane forms of voting and enabled people with disabilities to easily find their way to the ballot, boosting their self-esteem and deep confidence in democracy.
