Housing Minister: SDGs top government’s priorities

New York, April 30 (BNA) The Minister of Housing, Basem bin Yaqoub Al Hamer, affirmed that the sustainable development goals enjoy great support from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin. Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, indicated that the sustainable development goals are at the top of the government’s work priorities.

He highlighted the government’s keenness on its strategic partnership with the United Nations to implement the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

He stressed the Kingdom’s leadership’s quick response to meet the requirements of the sustainable development goals, by launching quality projects for citizens, noting that Bahrain has invested 3.3 billion dinars to finance social housing projects since the establishment of the Ministry of Housing.

He also indicated the Kingdom’s interest in implementing climate change initiatives, noting that the keynote speech delivered by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26) represents a roadmap for the government’s work methodology and relevant authorities to reduce climate change challenges.

This came during the minister’s meeting with the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Abdullah Shahid, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where Al-Hammar is leading the Kingdom’s delegation to the high-level meeting on the implementation of the new urban agenda and sustainable development goals. 2030.

The President of the United Nations General Assembly recalled his visit to the Kingdom earlier this year, where he was warmly welcomed by His Majesty the King and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, adding that he reviewed the Bahraini-UN cooperation during his meetings with the Kingdom’s officials.

He congratulated Bahrain for presenting its second voluntary national report on sustainable development goals, and its report on human rights, noting that the Kingdom has made great strides in deepening the concepts of human rights and their effective application.

The President of the United Nations General Assembly noted that there is great interest in small island states, as evidenced by the committee’s relevant focus on tackling global warming and the effects of war, including rising sea levels.

He also praised the tangible efforts made by Bahrain’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Jamal Faris Al-Ruwai’i.
